We’re changing a few things up this time around with the High End Scrip Shop (HESS).

Many items will no longer scale in price, but we used historic data to limit quantity and use an average price. Items that do scale will now only scale after a certain quantity is sold. The scaling will be a bigger jump, and I’ll publish those numbers in a response to this thread a little later. We reset or lowered the price on many items on sale that scaled too high.

The Coraesine Relic is retired. Permabless will be returning in June.

Retiring this run are Undead Bane and Weight Reduction certificates.

New to this run are sanctifying certificates, uncommon, and rare flare certificates. What flares are which? Well here is a list!
[+]UNCOMMON: Disintegrate, Disruption, Acid, Vacuum, Plasma, and Steam.
[+]RARE: Dispel†, Unbalance, Grapple, Slash, Puncture, and Crush.
[+]† Priced differently.

We will also have very limited supplies for a hidden bracer and a troll heart. These will retire in February whether they sell or not.

I’m sure there are questions, so I’ll leave this post at that.

Thanks, Wyrom. Is it true that:

[+]Anything in the shop last time, that isn’t mentioned here, is back again? (Perhaps with modifications to base price / quantity / scaling)
[+]You have fully listed all the new additions to the shop? No other surprises in store?

Will you share the prices prior to opening?

Yes, unless something is glaringly wrong in our notes somewhere. If you want to confirm something, feel free to post about it and I’ll look.

>>[+]You have fully listed all the new additions to the shop? No other surprises in store?

That’s the full additions, but the other take away is also resetting or lowering the price of things from the end price in August 2017. One thing we are going to try to make sure we do is give notice when something is being pulled. If before the end of this run, we don’t mention it’s being removed or retired, it will be there for next run.

>>Prices

No, but I’ll talk more about the scaling later.

It was asked on Discord if Greater Elemental flares were returning. The answer is…YES! They are.

Some more details I forgot to share. This year, you will REDEEM your certificate, which will send out an email to Haliste and myself. The certificate will crumble at that point. Turnaround will depend on your availability, volume of services, and the specific service.

Subj: Re: High End Scrip Shop: February 2018
I’m disappointed that the HESS distribution system continually favors the same few players willing and able to spend the most money, especially between runs. When Duskruin first opened and a few players chose to chase rotflares with huge investments of time and money, it was crazy but fair. From that point on, however, the only way to have access to the better items at a reasonable price was to buy script from others and attend the opening moments of the HESS or item release. This strategy by a few greatly diminishes the majority’s expectations of ever saving enough, even over many runs, to ever compete for the limited items. It’s also impossible to anticipate if the item will be available when/if you finally have enough script to possibly succeed.

I’ve suggested previously that it would be a simpler and more honest concession to reality to just offer the best items for sale directly in the Simustore. If we instead opt to continue this little fantasy, we should at least consider an account limit of one major HESS purchase, with the important additional requirement that at least 25k of the bloodscript be farmed during that particular run. I would also not open the shop until the last day. I would use a random raffle to determine room order for selection, taking in 10 at a time to facilitate swift purchase.

I really don’t understand why management continues to allow items and services to be oversold and made common. Epic deep and light items are now ubiquitous. Everyone has a 6x/6x nervestaff. With 6x hcp items everywhere, who would want a mere 5x anything anymore? Fusion had to be nerfed due to the short-sighted release of so many random enhansives from events like Duskruin. “Unique” spell phrases were released so abundantly that there aren’t enough characters to actually use them in each class.

If anyone actually read the old D&D Dungeon Master’s Guidebook, it gives sagacious advice about quelling the zeal to release too many powerful items to your players lest they lose interest, or the game becomes imbalanced. Sadly, the horse is already out of the barn, flogged, burned, buried, exhumed, and raised from the dead to beat again.

I usually like Duskruin events a lot, especially the Arena. I already have several rats from the first run when they were actually catchable. I am one of the few players that has never won a pendant in the arena despite MANY runs. They are now too common to bother though, as not having one and a customized rat too is clearly where the cooler players are at.

In case you haven’t noticed, there are several key players unloading a LOT of very high-end items of late, downsizing and/or leaving the lands. Duskruin and other events need to better understand their impact to the overall game in the long run, and not just focus on the immediate moment and any surge of profit it may generate.

I still intend to support this event, as much as my usual meager $100-$300 might allow, but it is becoming less appealing to do so with each iteration.

To try to tackle the scaling costs, we looked at the quantities of items sold at each event and the average pricing.

Items that are not scaling are:
Undead Bane
TD
Weight Reduction
Ironwright
Knockout Flares
Bubble Flares
Polearm Flares
De-Fusion
Master Quality Instruments Upgrades
RotFlares
Ithzir Unlocks
Uncommon and Rare Flares (excluding Dispel)
Troll Heart
Hidden Bracer
Enchanting Potions
Multi-setting rings
Phoenix

The other items will scale only after a certain number have sold. Those are:
Acuity Flares
Mana Flares
Greater Elemental Flares
Sanctifying
Dispel Flares

We have put many items to have a certain quantity, but we made sure to look at the totals that were sold at previous events so that we are on track with expectations.

Limiting the high end shop to 1 item per account is nuts, and requiring 25k be farmed that run is insane, I don’t mind buying someones else scrip but i’ve not done it. I’ve always farmed my own, I might farm out 25k in a week if the arena is open but i’m sure not doing that with the sewer only and I would be pretty angry if the 75k or so i’ve saved up over the last couple of runs was useless all because I was required to farm ANOTHER 25k after i’ve already spent all that time and money just because you think it should only be one item or have another huge farming req each time.

Spell preps being tossed out too much is true and you have a point on that and that no’one wants 5x anymore unless its for some alt they may or may not care much about, but honestly I think a lot of that part has more to do with how long most of the current player base has been playing and less with the sewer loot. Assuming everyone has there stuff done now is kind of wrong too, I was almost ready to start taking my fusion plate to 7x, was part way through the 6x enchant when they suddenly changed the difficulty of doing that drastically. Suddenly what should have been a somewhat difficult project if I had had it ready to start just before became no way in hell. What was easy to take to 6x at start suddenly became 55% until they threw out a mercy reversal for already started projects. I managed to get 4 more levels before I finished it and still now my wizard has no chance at doing 7x on it. I probably won’t have the ability until I finish getting him from 71 to 100 is what that tells me effectively tossing another year into the mix before I can begin the long slow padding process.

I suppose what i’m saying is in some things they have done lately to nerf the finishing of high end items has drastically effected people who have been working for years on that one piece, I know others who now will never get their armor finished off because of the changes after spending several years working on the piece so to say they don’t do anything at all to limit this stuff would be wrong, though sometimes how it’s done I don’t care for at all.

not sure if the “lift the item service limit” was in reference to the WPS Smithy from last run having a max of 25 WPS services, or if you are also referencing the fact that certificates can only be redeemed once per item per run. If both, holy cow. We could take a 6x/6x T4 runestaff to 6x/10x T4 runestaff in this one run. Or other neat combos. Please please let it be both.

One more tidbit before tomorrow. We typically stagger the event opening and the HESS opening. This is to ensure we can give maximized attention to anything that arises during the first night. HESS will likely open an hour or so after the event opens.

Subj: Re: High End Scrip Shop: February 2018
Tarakan,

It seems to me the latest iteration of the HESS addresses your concern about saving script. They are (as I understood WYROM’s post) increasing the cost on all (or most) of the items that used to scale but keeping the cost fixed. That means there’s no value in having saved up script from past runs if you can farm what you need (assuming the item one is trying to get doesn’t “sell out”-but the prices are high enough it’s not super likely I’d bet).

For what it’s worth, I’ve never bought script for myself (I have bought script for others who couldn’t be on since I’m on as much as I can during these events). I can earn enough for my own needs just doing the events.

But even if you’re buying script, it doesn’t seem to me to be a problem. It’s an important part of the game environment to be able to buy and sell-without it the game is going to be less interesting.

The things we can buy at DR (and other events) are fun, even useful, but they don’t make the game unplayable if you don’t have them-whether you’re talking about fluff (mostly at other events) or mechanical (which are more common at Duskruin). I have some decent items in part from DR but my kids (who also play) have zero items from any event…and they do just fine.

In other words, high end items are something to strive for, not something anyone has to have to succeed. And you’re never going to have a game where resources don’t determine (at least in part) what your character can get. Maybe you’re an under-employed kid so, through sheer time you get something a “regular” player doesn’t have. Fine. Your resource was personal time.

Or maybe you’ve been playing this game for 25 years (I personally started over 25 years ago). You might use silvers to buy BS. So what? In that particular case, it’s one in-game resource for another. And even if you paid real $’s for the BS, I don’t personally see the problem-others getting things that way doesn’t change my personal experience in the game (for the record, I’ve never paid US $s for anything in the game. Unless you count Simucoins ;-).

Some of your examples are well known and understood mistakes. Like the 6x items from a run or two ago. That was just an oversight and-though I disagree with the solution-they made a decision to not reverse the situation. As someone else said, I already wasn’t buying 5x items for my characters before that so it didn’t really change anything.

Yet my kids are doing just fine with 5x items. It’s not make-or-break.

I do agree with you on some points. We NEED to have rare and sought after items to keep the game interesting. I think they do a pretty good job at managing that (all things considered). You’re right that pendants are too common-but it sounds like they are trying to address that this run with the archaeologist. Epic deep/light items are certainly common-though I don’t really think that’s such a bad thing. On the really high items (like Undead Bane, the Relic, etc.), they priced them so they stayed rare.

I’d be seriously opposed to a “just buy it at the store” type system. That completely destroys the suspension-of-disbelief that matters in some sense. Plus, part of the draw is the “gambling” aspect (that term is a tad fraught with issues and isn’t 100% on the mark. But this isn’t the post to discuss that). Just like if you got rid of the economy for items, you’d seriously undermine the draw to the game world if you removed the chance to get something.

I say the above knowing the HESS does remove the gambling aspect in the sense that you will be able to earn the script for what you want if you put in the time. Or you can buy what you need via silvers or US $s. In that sense you already have what you’re asking for. But in-game it doesn’t feel like I’m just paying SCs for the items/services I want-and that’s important.

But note, no matter what the distribution method, those with disposable resources are going to end up with the best items given sufficient time. We both know that. Myself, I don’t worry about it because it’s not really a solvable problem-and it’s not clear to me it even IS a problem…

Anyway, just my (over long) thoughts. Even though I have a different take from you, I appreciate your having posted yours.

I agree with Tarakan in spirit certainly. The game becomes less fun when it seems a lot of people have uber stuff. It makes your uber stuff or your desire to gain uber stuff a bit less appealing. Over time this does take the shine off of things a bit.

However, to me it is just a numbers game. Less players playing compared to the “glory” days we all remember and the game having to release/invent new and sometimes powerful items means simply there is a lot of uber stuff in the hands of 100 or 150 people (or whatever the number is). The other realities that feed into this are that Simu needs to make money and players now have very very few ways to lose items. So uber items in the past got broken or lost, now just keep piling on top of each other.

I dont know if a lot of people care about game balance anymore as it relates to creatures in the sense of normal day to day hunting? It seems to me that people just want to feel more powerful period. When places or creatures are released that do seem balanced for the current crop of players mostly with 5x + gear…those areas are avoided. Red forest for example is tough, but feels “modern” in a way. Hardly anyone hunts there in certain zones. So when people talk about game balance, I guess im not 100% sure what they mean.

I suppose I don’t count as everyone cause I don’t have a nervestaff on any of my characters. The best I have is a 4x void flaring one I ensorcelled myself.

I’ll also gladly pass on the 6x hcp items people are demanding hundreds or thousands of dollars for on the PC, half of whom won’t accept silvers at all cause they’re leaving the game. Good luck to them on getting those prices, but I could buy a new car with the money I’d spend outfitting my characters from those people. Anyone that’s actually buying that stuff can feel free to email my play.net for far more entertaining and/or fulfilling ways to flush that kind of money down the toilet (I’d list them here, but they’d get the post pulled).

I beg to differ.
Where the treekin used to drop uncuts (diamonds & emeralds) in their personal ‘search’ results, they are now dropping topazes and turquoise stones.
Mind you, their boxes are still pretty good–I can still get multiple uncuts in a single box, or one of those + a pearl or a good [pink or blue] sapphire–but the hunting pressure has definitely kicked in and pushed their loose loot down.

On this, did you look into initial cost as a factor in quantities sold? For example, I imagine the Master Quality instrument would have had more buyers had it been offered at a lower price point initially.

Sooo the origional 8x pot was 40 pours was 60k , the 40k 9x was 80 and the 10x 100k.

Now you have 40k bloodscrip for a 10 pour 8x potion? You can call these prices averaged out but it’s a HUGE ripoff unless you have secretly raised the number of pours.
