It’s no longer possible to defensively benefit from holding a runestaff and a shield at the same time. As a one-handed defensive tool, you can still benefit from the shield in such a scenario, but the runestaff will not be able to be used effectively.

Awww, man!

I broke GemStone. πŸ™

Well, it was a good couple of years while I was mangling your combat system. πŸ™‚

Will having a shield out ALWAYS force you to be using the shield use DS formula going forward if there is one in your left hand? In other words, even if I have more skills to have a higher runestaff DS, if by chance I happen to loot/equip a shield, will the Shield DS be used over that even if it’s DS would be lower? IE making looting/picking up shields a more perilous adventurer in front of mobs due to lowering your DS.

I would think that it would, because you’re disrupting the two-handed nature of the runestaff.

.

For what it’s worth, my “get treasure” macro is done as two lines in the Wizard with a “?”, so I just type “aegis” once and it executes both the get & put as consecutive commands.
Window of vulnerability is minimal, and that’s with something not as sophisticated as a Lich script.

Don’t think you can change something that major and not allow people to respec.

Prefacing this with that this doesn’t affect any of my characters in any way.

But it is a major change rolled out with no warning, even if it was a ridiculous build for races that didn’t have 4 arms.

Really need to give a fix skills here.

Until August 10th, 2018, if you’re a Wizard, Sorcerer, Cleric, or Empath (Pures) and are 1x trained in Shield Use, ASSIST and point them to this post and you’ll be granted a FIXSKILL. As always, it will not stack with any other FIXSKILLS, so be sure you have none available when requesting it. Bards, Rangers, and Paladins (Semis) can get an SGM referral for special consideration, since it’s going to require them to demonstrate their skill set in more magical skills and for me to review logs to verify they actually hunted with a runestaff to determine eligibility.

Why not bards that are trained at least a certain per level in magical skills? Seems like they may be major losers in this as well.

Yes, yes we am.

Particularly since Bards could double in Shield Use, for only just a little more than any of the pures could to only single. πŸ™
(All the pures are 13p/0m to single; Bards are 5p/0m [2], or 15p to double.)

Very grateful for granting the fixskills, this lessens the blow from the change. Thank you!

Edited last post (http://forums.play.net/forums/GemStone%20IV/Hunting%20and%20Combat/Runestaffs%20and%20Magical%20Staves/view/93) to include Semis with other requirements for eligibility.

As Jan would say, Fair dinkum!

I actually had the annual one still pending from May, so I just dumped all the Shield Use [and converted SBash to Feint] last night.
(However, I’m reasonably likely to have the Bard hit cap by next May, so if you’re willing to credit me with one I can have it banked to see whether I like Shield Use more than Runestaff, the week before that one lands…)

So if you have a mutant build IE Warpath that swings, will this change affect you in anyway, will it nerf mutant builds?

Unless there’s something not mentioned in the announcement, this shouldn’t affect such a build at all unless you’re swinging a runestaff while holding a shield.

Not happy about this but don’t really have a leg to stand on to complain about it. Was nice while it worked. Onward to brawl and shield, I guess. I’m over runestaves until Disarm is addressed.
