Oh man, this spell is exceedingly annoying when the treekin in the Red Forest use it. Nice little item.

Newsby wants to know what the name of the spell is, so … she can enter it correctly in the newsfeed and on the wiki.

I’ve been referring to it as “Bark Skin” on the wiki, for obvious reasons.

e.g. https://gswiki.play.net/Treekin_druid

fake edit: Also, you’ll see an example in the log on that page of Bark Skin not always crumbling after the first hit.

That’s not just… glowbark??

“Glowbark” is the name of the tree. The outer layer of that tree is the bark; so, glowbark bark.

It’s like the hornbeam tree (a.k.a. ‘ironwood’), a piece of it would be wood. So, ironwood wood.

I’m fairly certain the poster knows the definition of bark. They were likely just pointing out how funny the phrase “glowbark bark” sounds.

The spell it casts, is in fact, called Barkskin.

I am possibly the world’s worst naturalist, so where someone else might walk through a forest saying that this is an elm and that’s an oak and that’s a hickory, to me they are all just ‘tree’, and to me they don’t produce “oak” or “maple” or “pine”, they produce “wood”.

It happens to have a wrapper. <shrug> Which is different from the wood itself.

.

.

Linquistically, is it different from, “You were speeding fast!” Isn’t that just… speeding?

As a naturalist, I can confirm this.

The manner in which non-wood components of a tree are referenced is (tree name) (part). If it’s the woody fiber, then it’s referred to as either ‘wood’ (generic) or by the name of the tree (specific). That can be further modified by saying HOW it is cut (an oak board, a pine post), but that’s generally it.

So.. for the purposes of this specific Elanthian tree..

It is a glowbark (tree).
It has glowbark leaves, and glowbark bark.
The shelf carved from it, however, would be referred to as hewn from glowbark.

A naturalist?!? <blink> Really?!?

You mean that I could actually have a target audience–outside the Conservation dudes working at Philmont–that I can tell The World’s Only Forestry Joke to?
(I mean seriously: there’s all kinds of math, or physics, or even data management jokes. Engineering, geology, sure. But Forestry?!? Who the hell tells forestry jokes?)

I think the dogmatists in Wyneb should cast it. Unless other folks think that’d be too ruff.
