2018-06-02 Order of the Sphere and Scythe Lecture on Haruspicy

The Order of the Sphere and Scythe welcomed Yhtrin as a Seer of their order just before he delivered a captivating lecture on the half-krolvin divination method of haruspicy. This was followed by a demonstration of his surgical Faendryl knowledge combined with half-krolvin divination, where Yhtrin gave insights into the general future of Seree and Darcena.

Subj: [LOG] Sphere and Scythe Lecture on Haruspisy
What follows is a heavily redacted log from Seer Yhtrin’s lecture on haruspisy among the half-krolvin. Not shown is how the event began with the death of Nips immediately after Mikalmas recited, “We will now begin the presentation of the evening. Please settle yourselves, silence your pets and gadgets, and lets give the floor to Rovvigen to begin the presentation.” The timing was fortuitous for quite a bit of laughter with my favorite part being the line Mikalmas uttered after a short discussion with Evician on who would be performing the resurrection. Mikalmas said to Evician, regarding his disinterest in who would be bringing the rotting pile of flesh back to life, “I’d just prefer it not stink up the entire evening.”

Darcena is quite intrigued by her supposed-future wherein she is at a crossroads with many choices coming together where the death of current self was imminent and a hard change is coming. She suspects, though, that it actually refers to the events in her life of nine months ago from which she is still recovering. Much change in her has already occurred with much more to come.

Thanks for the fun,

Jen

This small niche between two buildings has been neatly landscaped into a tiny moonlit garden, its careful mosaic of flagstones interspersed with patches of trimmed grass. A low stone bench rests along one vine-covered wall, and a patch of colorful violets surrounds a painted wooden barrel in one corner. You also see a mug of foamy Very Berry beer, a sturdy modwir chest, an engraved haon chest, an acid-pitted gold trunk, the Taelarn disk, the Mikalmas disk, a linen-covered rolling side table with some stuff on it, the seaweed-covered Rovvigen disk, a raven that is flying around, the Yhtrin disk and an indignant river spirit that is flying around.

Rovvigen recites softly:
“We are gathered here tonight to first off welcome Yhtrin as a Seer into the Order”

Yhtrin recites:
“Let us begin with the origins of the divination method, the half-Krolvin.”

Yhtrin says, “There are several stories I could recite, but I believe one tale will explain how they view their Seers, whom they call Apdo Gno Burzka’ask. Which translates into “He of corpse sight”.”

Yhtrin says, “A half krolvin raider is a good and loyal solider on his captain’s ship. Yet he coveted more, and why not? Was he not the strongest, fiercest of the raiders? Perhaps, he thought, he should be Captain.”

Yhtrin says, “But you see, the difference between a Raider and a Captain lay in the power of command. In this case, command of a Apdo Gno Burzka’ask.”

Yhtrin asks, “As the Raider was taken down to the chambers of the Seer, he despaired. Those he thought loyal were more afraid of the Apdo Gno Burzka’ask. What horrors awaited him?”

Yhtrin says, “The next time the Raiders launched, this Raider was at the front of the line, berserk with fury, mindless in his brutality.”

Yhtrin says, “There is the end of the tale but it tells us much about how they view their Seers. They believe them to be a conduit to the divine, and so fear and nearly worship them.”

Yhtrin recites:
“The method itself is simple enough. You take an animal’s corpse, flay the skin, crack the breastbone, and take an organ out.”

Yhtrin says, “That organ will then be studied, and the different afflictions of the organ will explain to an experienced Apdo Gno Burzka’ask what their Captain should be about.”

Rovvigen softly asks, “So how old is the method do you know?”

Yhtrin says, “At least as old as the half Krolvin have existed, perhaps longer if it has roots in the Krolvin themselves. There is some indication this was a slave practice, and so might have originated as a reacted to their confinement. Sweetmeats are easy to find, after all.”

Yhtrin recites:
“Next, let me talk a little about my own method.”

Yhtrin says, “I use modern Faendryl medicine to identify the parts of the organ, and assess their overall health. Using this method allows me insights that no half-Krolvin could hope to duplicate.”

Yhtrin says, “But I think I have spoken enough on the method, honestly. The proof, as they say, is in the blood.”

Yhtrin says, “Join me and let us go harvest some organs.”

Seree hoarsely says, “I thought it was pudding.”

Seree hoarsely asks, “Blood pudding?”

Rovvigen softly says, “Everyone please stand and join Yhtrin.”

There is a bright flash and a bacon-wrapped blood pudding donut appears in the air, then falls to the ground.
There is a bright flash and a bacon-wrapped blood pudding donut appears in the air, then falls to the ground.

Evician says, “Gee, i wonder who is her.”

You hear someone chuckling.

Yhtrin says, “How mysterious, blood pudding donuts from the skies.”

Yhtrin says, “Going to give everyone a moment to be ready.”

Yhtrin says, “Alright, let us proceed to the sewer.”

<Yhtrin walks the group to the Catacombs.>

[Catacombs, Wide Tunnel – 7495]
The passage widens almost to the point that it could be considered a chamber. The walls and ceiling are illuminated brightly by a strange, glowing lichen, and the eerie light now shows plainly a series of burrows and holes set into the walls from which strange clawing and scratching sounds emanate. You also see the Mikalmas disk, the seaweed-covered Rovvigen disk, the Taelarn disk, the Yhtrin disk and a raven that is flying around.

Yhtrin says, “Now to wait for a volunteer rat.”

Yhtrin flashes an evil grin. The tips of his chipped ivory fangs are clearly visible, protruding from beneath his upper lip. His eyes suddenly glow with a dark hue.

Rovvigen yells, “Come out rats!”

Kheksa asks, “Anyone have any cheese?”

Kheksa says, “I heard if it is waved…”

Rovvigen looks at a giant rat and cheers!

Taelarn exclaims, “We have a volunteer!”

Yhtrin asks, “Evician, would you?”

>Several rats are killed.

Laying his hands upon the soft expanse of the rat’s stomach, Yhtrin makes a deep cut in the flesh with his sgian dubh. Innards begin to spill upon the floor, and he fishes around in them for a moment before prizing free a plump heart riddled with fat pockets.

Yhtrin says, “Ah, it seems the heart is most intact in this specimen.”

Yhtrin exclaims, “Another heart, heart day it seems!”

(Darcena wipes a little drool off her chin with the back of her leather gloves.)

Yhtrin put a plump heart riddled with fat pockets in his veniom-trimmed greatcloak.

Mikalmas says, “I think enough death has occured.”

Mikalmas traces a sign while petitioning the spirits for cognition…

Mikalmas gestures.
A sense of peace and calm settles over the area.

Laying his hands upon the soft expanse of the rat’s stomach, Yhtrin makes a deep cut in the flesh with his sgian dubh. Innards begin to spill upon the floor, and he fishes around in them for a moment before prizing free a puckered acid-burned stomach.

Yhtrin put a puckered acid-burned stomach in his veniom-trimmed greatcloak.

You look at Mikalmas and shake your head.

Yhtrin says, “A stomach here…”

Yhtrin stretches.

(Yhtrin licks some of the blood from his dripping hands.)

You hum happily to yourself.

The voice of Cruxophim amusedly inquires, “We skinning rats now?”

Taelarn asks, “Does the process of searching for an organ give you any portents?”

Evician says, “Apparently.”

Rovvigen softly says, “For the divination method Yhtrin is showing us.”

Speaking to Taelarn, Yhtrin says, “It does, yes. I find the most intact organ, the one that calls to my sense as a Seer. This is a part of the process that is hardest to explain.”

Yhtrin removes a plump heart riddled with fat pockets from in his veniom-trimmed greatcloak.

Yhtrin says, “Enough specimen for a reading, I think.”

<Yhtrin takes the group back to the Garden Niche.>

Yhtrin recites:
“Now for the interaction portion, who would like a reading?”

Speaking to Yhtrin, Taelarn says, “Thank you, I find it interesting that you can get glimpses simply from the process of obtaining the organ. This is a much more involved process than some of the other methods of divination.”

Seree hoarsely says, “I’ll volunteer.”

Speaking to Seree, Yhtrin asks, “Do you have a question in mind or did you wish to know your general future?”

Seree hoarsely says, “General, I think.”

Yhtrin says, “Let us look at the heart, here, before I even begin.”

Yhtrin raises his plump heart skyward!

Yhtrin says, “It is riddled with fat pockets, and those are the obvious signs of heart disease.”

Seree hoarsely says, “Rolton must have gotten into some pastries.”

Yhtrin says, “This heart smells fresh, at least.”

Yhtrin turns the heart over in his hands, examining it in minute detail.

Yhtrin says, “Looking closely at the heart, here, and here, you can see that sinew has strangled this large artery called the pulmonary artery.”

(Yhtrin pokes at the heart with his bare finger, making a squelshing noise.)

Yhtrin turns the heart over in his hands, examining it in minute detail.

Speaking to Yhtrin, you ask, “May I see?”

Yhtrin says, “The thick masses of fat are also blocking what we call the aorta, and pulmonary vein here.”

You say, “It’s clearly not your heart. Yours is shriveled and black, Cruxophim.”

You glare at Cruxophim.

(Yhtrin sticks his finger into one of the larger hole in the heart, and moves his finger to mimic a heart beating.)

Cruxophim extends his hand, palm open, right in front of your face with a dismissive snort.

Yhtrin turns the heart over in his hands, examining it in minute detail.

Yhtrin gives a plump heart riddled with fat pockets a final turn, and you watch as it begins to wither before your eyes. Within seconds, the heart is brittle and then nothing more than sanguine dust that slips through his fingers.

Yhtrin says, “And my last insight before the power of my Seeing consumes the heart is the redness of the surface and how come of the fibers have calcified.”

Yhtrin says, “Overall, a very unhealthy heart.”

Evician says, “Pretty sure the rat didnt care.”

Speaking hopefully to Yhtrin, Seree asks, “Does that mean I’m soon to perish?”

Yhtrin recites:
“This could portend many things for your future, but you should be wary of change and betrayal for certain.”

Yhtrin recites:
“You will encounter blood in your future, although it may be the blood of birth or the blood of death.”

Speaking hoarsely to Yhtrin, Seree says, “My thanks for the kind words.”

Rovvigen softly asks, “So the health of the organ matters in regards to the reading?”

Yhtrin asks, “Would anyone else like a reading?”

Yhtrin says, “If I was in private, doing a pre determined reading, I would envoke a ritual circle to sharpen my third eye.”

Yhtrin says, “Along with many other preparations.”

Rivienne asks, “What do you mean by a pre-determined reading?”

Speaking to Rivienne, Yhtrin says, “A reading where I would make a kill very specifically for a client.”

Yhtrin says, “Lets see, this heart.”

Speaking to you, Yhtrin asks, “Ahem. The heart is riddled with fat, much like the previous. Why do the rats here have so much heart disease?”

Rivienne says, “Maybe it’s their gigantism.”

Speaking nonchalantly to Yhtrin, Cruxophim answers, “It’s certainly not the food lying around.”

Yhtrin says, “This heart did not have enough blood flow, indicated by the blue colored veins and the whiteish muscle colouring.”

Yhtrin says, “This could mean you are at a crossroads, a point where many choices are coming together.”

Yhtrin says, “Again, fat has occulded the aorta and left pulmonary vein.”

You muse, “Oh really.”

Cruxophim mutters something about fat-rats.

Yhtrin says, “Death of current self was imminent. Change is coming.”

You smirk at Cruxophim.

Yhtrin says, “And here, the fibers are the heart are calcified. This change will not be an easy one.”

You drawl, “Are you sure you aren’t reading nine months ago?”

Yhtrin asks, “No?”

Yhtrin chuckles.

You smile at Yhtrin.

(Cruxophim munches idly on the length of intestines.)

Speaking softly to Cruxophim, Rovvigen says, “Eww.”

Cruxophim peers quizzically at Rovvigen.

You surreptitiously glance at Cruxophim.

Yhtrin says, “I feel a bit exhausted, if anyone else would like a reading I see several Seers here other than myself. But that will conclude my demonstrations for the evening.”

Speaking to Yhtrin, Taelarn asks, “Would you mind answering any questions we may have?”

Speaking to Yhtrin, Taelarn asks, “I understand how you learned the technique, but can you explain how else you have adapted the skills you practice with the knowledge you have and learned as a Faendryl?”

Speaking to Taelarn, Yhtrin says, “Modern Faendryl medicine shows me where to look, and ancient tradition shows me how to look. If that makes sense.”

Speaking to Yhtrin, Taelarn says, “It does, thank you.”

I believe it’s actually haruspicy, but alas, I cannot edit.
